Climate Action Reserve adipic acid protocols receive Integrity Council Governing Board’s stamp of approval as high-integrity

The approvals continue to support the strengthening and trust in the global VCM

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Governing Board of the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (Integrity Council) approved the Climate Action Reserve US Adipic Acid Production Protocol Version 1.0 and China Adipic Acid Production Protocol Version 1.0 as meeting its high-integrity Core Carbon Principles (CCP). The protocols are the fourth and fifth Reserve protocols to receive this approval.

The US and China Adipic Acid Production Protocols address the destruction and recycling of nitrous oxide (N2O) at adipic acid plants in those two countries. N2O has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 298, meaning that it traps 298 times more heat in the atmosphere compared to carbon dioxide (CO2). Adipic acid plants produce N2O at a high volume. Given the combination of the high GWP and high volume of production, preventing this industrial waste from being vented into the atmosphere yields significant results.

“We thank the Integrity Council for these approvals. Industrial carbon projects are critical for reducing emissions. They can sometimes be overlooked because they don’t always have much charisma, but they pack a big punch in terms of environmental impact,” said Robin Rix, President, Climate Action Reserve.

“We applaud the work of the Integrity Council and extend our appreciation to all who have been involved in integrating CCP labels into the market and helping facilitate the identification of high-integrity credits,” said Kristen Gorguinpour, Vice President, Programs, Climate Action Reserve.

Receiving CCP approval signifies the protocols are high integrity because they meet 10 principles for governance, emissions impact, and sustainable development. For more information on CCP-approved methodologies and programs, please visit https://icvcm.org/assessment-status/.
