Version 1.0

The Climate Action Reserve is kicking off the development of the Chile Landfill Protocol, which will provide guidance on how to quantify, monitor, report, and verify greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions associated with installing a landfill gas collection and destruction system at a landfill located Chile.

The protocol aims to promote the installation of systems for collecting and destroying methane gas from landfills in Chile, thereby reducing GHG emissions, advancing the country’s climate mitigation goals, and mitigating the impacts of climate change. The disposal of solid waste represents an increasingly significant source of greenhouse gas emissions in Chile. According to the Fifth Biennial Update Report of Chile (2020), emissions from waste disposal have increased by 681% since 1990 and by 12% since 2018, driven by population growth and current consumption patterns. This trend highlights the urgent need to improve waste management and reduce its climate impact.

Local Stakeholder Engagement

The Reserve seeks to engage local stakeholders throughout the protocol development process to identify and incorporate relevant laws, norms, and conditions applicable to the landfill sector in Chile. Stakeholders interested in the protocol process are invited to complete the Local Engagement Form below and submit it to cmelendez@climateactionreserve.org to receive appropriate notifications for public engagement opportunities during protocol development.

Workgroup Process

The Chile Landfill Protocol is being developed through the Reserve’s multi-stakeholder workgroup process. The Reserve strives to create a well-balanced workgroup consisting of industry representatives, project developers, environmental NGOs, verification bodies, independent consultants, academia, and government bodies. Interested stakeholders are encouraged to apply by filling out the Statement of Interest form below and submitting it to cmelendez@climateactionreserve.org by July 16, 2025. All workgroup meetings will be held in Spanish.

Interested stakeholders that are not part of the workgroup are encouraged to participate in the process as “observers.” Observers may attend workgroup meetings in listen-only mode, submit written comments on the draft methodology when it is available for public comment, and attend the public webinar(s) held during the public comment period.
